Skater Support and Fundraising
One of the biggest goals for CCSC is continuing to provide financial skater support each year. This includes all skaters achieving and participating in the sport. CCSC is also committed to financially supporting the advancement and education of its judges and coaches.

The number keeps increasing for those that are eligible and have qualified for skater support during 2007-2008 ... more than half of the CCSC members. For those skaters that are eligible and have qualified for skater support that will be attending the 2008 Spring General Membership Meeting, you can receive a skater support check. Otherwise, all other skater support will be paid in June. CCSC has also supported two CCSC judges for their continued achievement as USFSA judges.

Over 50 members have qualified for CCSC Skater and Judge Support through Regional competitions or Test Sessions this year. This year has been a difficult year to predict financially, but the CCSC Board remains committed to its goal of encouraging achievement in the sport of figure skating. With the upcoming CCSC competitions in February and April, CCSC should be in a better position financially to determine the amount of skater support available.

The board has been carefully considering how to continue our excellent track record of providing skater support to our members. During the 2006-2007 membership year, the majority of members received some type of skater support from the following areas:
- Rulebooks
- Test Medals and Pins
- 50% Test Session Discount
- Qualifying Competitions
- Synchro Team Sectional Entry Fees
- Nonqualifying Competitions
- Judges Support
CCSC remains committed to providing skater support. There will be some changes for the 2007-2008 year. The skater support payments will most likely be made between January 2008 and June 2008, not quarterly as previously done. The Classic and the February Basic Skills competitions are the club's biggest fundraisers planned for this year. The income brought in from these two competitions will put the club in a better position to make the planned skater support payments.
Members also continue to receive skater support through Test Pins and Medals, Rulebooks, and one of the cheapest ice fee available during our weekly Saturday Club Ice sessions.
The club keeps track of all members that are eligible to earn skater support funds by recording each member that takes tests at our CCSC test sessions and competes at competitions that qualify for skater support. All questions about skater support can be addressed to Bonnie Boaz, CCSC President, at bonnie.boaz@da.org or Kathy Ridpath, CCSC Treasurer, at ridpath@outrig.com.

Skater support for 2007-2008 is under review currently. You can refer to the 2006-2007 Membership and Skater Support grids for a general idea of what types of skater support CCSC offers. Some of the items under review are when skater support checks will be issued, Synchronized Skating support for qualifying teams that advance to Nationals, and changes to rules for Pairs and Dance teams at the Juvenile and Intermediate levels going straight to Junior Nationals.

A big goal for CCSC is to increase our financial support to skaters and judges in our club. This year the Board has worked hard to find ways to do this. We are excited to announce that not only did we meet our goal for this year, but exceeded it by paying out at least $13,600 in financial support to our skaters and judges. Support has been given for those competing at Regionals (both Qualifying and Non-Qualifying), Junior Nationals, Adult Sectionals, Adult Nationals, the Classic (for those unable to attend a Regionals or Sectionals), and Synchro Sectionals. All members that test through CCSC test sessions receive 50% back on their test fees whether they pass or retry their test(s). This last year we also provided support through the significant lowering of Club Ice fees (one of the cheapest ice fees in the area for one of the most prime ice times!), giving free USFSA rulebooks, and setting up a support grid for our invaluable judges.
- Test Support - 43%
- Qualifying Competition Support - 14%
- Non-Qualifying Competition Support - 11%
- Test Pins and Medals - 11%
- Synchro Teams Sectional Entry Fees - 7%
- Rulebooks - 7%
- Judges School and Trial Judging Support - 5%
- Club Awards - 2%

The most important agenda item at the January CCSC Board meeting was Skater Support. This downloadable grid was developed to represent all the ways that CCSC is striving to provide skater support to its members. Download the CCSC Skater Support Grid.
June 2006
Starting in 2006-2007, skater support checks will be sent out quarterly when the club has the funds available. In other words, checks for Summer months (July, August, and September) will be sent out in October; for Fall months (October, November, and December) will be sent out in January; for Winter months (January, February, and March) will be sent out in April; for Spring months (April, May, and June) will be sent out in July. If funds are not available at the time the checks are planned to be sent out, an announcement will be sent out explaining the delay.
Skater support checks are written to members that are 18 years of age or older. Typically only one check is written per membership. For example, a check is written to the parent of a Jr. with Parent membership, not the Junior member. The skater support checks are paid and delivered in two ways. The CCSC Treasurer can write a check to a member and hand deliver it. The CCSC Treasurer can also send a check via BB&T. BB&T checks are sent via BB&T, using a BB&T envelope, which sometimes can be mistaken for bank advertising and spam mail. BB&T checks will need to be deposited within 60 days since there is an expiration date.

In 2003, after a lengthy process, CCSC was designated a 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS. We received this designation for our support of the US Figure Skating mission of "providing programs to encourage participation and achievement in the sport of figure skating." Many of our skaters, coaches and judges have participated in national and international competitive events sponsored by the US Figure Skating and ISU. With our new 501(c)(3) designation we will be able to increase our support for these and other development activities for all our members from beginner to adult.
Seeking a 501(c)(3) designation was a business decision by the Board. First, since 501(c)(3) organizations are tax-exempt CCSC does not have to pay taxes on revenues from events like the Classic. Even more important, donations made to CCSC by companies or individuals are tax-deductible. With our new status we will be in a better position to find financial sponsors and donors so we can offer even more scholarship aid to our skaters.
The IRS requirements for 501(c)(3) designation are very strict. Not all skating clubs that apply are automatically granted tax-exempt status. Clubs that primarily support recreational or amateur skating are not typically granted 501(c)(3) status. To achieve and maintain our designation, we must continue to promote activities that support skaters, coaches and judges who have demonstrated current or future skills consistent with high-level competitive skating.
It is important that each year we demonstrate to the IRS increasing support of 501(c)(3) activities. During the period from 2000 to 2003, we distributed between $2,000 and $3,000 annually for skater support. Most of these funds helped to defray skater costs of competing in regional, sectional, national and international competitions. This past year we increased our budget for skater support to $9,000 and next year we aim to do the same.
CCSC recently helped bring the Doug Leigh Seminar to the Triangle SportsPlex. More than 50 CCSC members participated. Each participating non-coach member received a $100 stipend from CCSC to attend the seminar. What made the Doug Leigh Seminar so successful was that we were able to provide Olympic-level coaching to so many CCSC skaters, from low-level to adult, who don't typically receive support for participating in regional (and higher) competitions.
The Doug Leigh Seminar is the kind of event that we need to sponsor as a 501(c)(3) organization. We have many different constituencies within the CCSC from low-level skaters to elite skaters, from ice dancers to synchronized skaters. The Board wants to support member skaters of all disciplines, abilities and ages. Very soon you will be receiving an online survey to find out what activities you would like the club to support. Please help us better serve you by responding to the survey!
